The specific usage method of electrode paste in submerged arc furnace

Electrode paste, also known as electrode carbon paste, is a semi-finished material made by mixing high-purity graphite powder and other additives, widely used in the production process of submerged arc furnaces. Its role in an electric furnace is crucial, as electrode paste is a key medium for converting electrical energy into thermal energy and the only connecting channel between molten metal and the outside world. Below, we will provide a detailed introduction to the specific usage method of electrode paste in a submerged arc furnace.

1、 Preparation of electrode paste

The preparation of electrode paste first requires selecting high-purity graphite powder as the main raw material, and usually adding some binders and plasticizers to improve its processing performance and strength. After precise weighing, these raw materials are placed in a kneading machine and mixed evenly with water to form a paste with appropriate viscosity. Subsequently, the mixture is fed into a molding machine, extruded into the desired shape, such as cylindrical or conical, and then dried and roasted to obtain the finished electrode paste.

2、 Charging of electrode paste

During the use of a submerged arc furnace, the electrode paste needs to be installed into the electrode hole through a specialized charging process. Firstly, lift the electrode paste onto the top of the electrode hole using equipment such as a crane, and then slowly lower it so that it can fit tightly with the inner wall of the electrode hole. In this process, it is necessary to ensure that the centerline of the electrode paste is consistent with the centerline of the electrode hole to ensure the smooth passage of current.

3、 Connecting current of electrode paste

After the electrode paste is inserted into the electrode hole, the current can be turned on. In the initial stage, the current should not be too high to avoid overheating due to excessive resistance caused by insufficient coking of the electrode paste. As the electrode paste gradually carbonizes and hardens, the current can gradually increase to the rated value. Throughout the entire process, it is necessary to closely monitor the working status of the electrode paste, as well as the changes in parameters such as current and voltage, in order to adjust the operating strategy in a timely manner.

4、 Maintenance of electrode paste

During the operation of the electric furnace, due to the gradual consumption of electrode paste, it is necessary to regularly supplement the electrode paste. In addition, it is important to observe whether the electrode paste has cracked or fallen off. Once problems are found, they should be dealt with promptly to avoid affecting the normal operation of the electric furnace.
